Andrew's Birthday

What!!!
Andrew's face tells it all - the surprise, the deliciousness, and the fun of having a birthday.

Here's a rundown of the day.

There was cake!

Enough to share!

Banana cake with fruit loops on top.

Give me the cake. NOW!!

There were cousins!

Nice ones who shared their baptism day. (Thank you, Saffron!!)

Mischievous ones. What are you doing Nigel?

There was singing!!

And don't forget the spontaneous clapping (one of the best things of having a one year old around is the clapping).

There was a mess!

Mmmm good.

We're so glad to have this little, gulp, toddler.

Birthday Boston Cream Pie

I have a birthday in the next week. Wendy has a Utah Museum's association conference. The two schedules don't mix well; so we decided to have my birthday cake with the Stuart's at family dinner.

Wendy asked me earlier in the week what kind of pie I would want (she didn't want to make a cake.) In an effort to just make things as easy as possible on her I told her that we could just buy a Boston Cream Pie from the Harmon's bakery.  Wendy understood "buy" as "make" and "from the Harmon's bakery" as "homemade." So she spent all afternoon after church today making a Boston cream pie.

Wendy hated it. At least it looked nice!

We thought we'd introduce Andrew to a birthday cake and an open flame candle. We thought he might be intrigued by the candle flickering. We were wrong. He started crying during the last part of Happy Birthday. So he either didn't like the candle...or he didn't like our singing.

Happy Birthday Ben

Growing up we never had elaborate birthday parties. We got to choose a birthday dinner and dessert. My birthday also was a little more complicated because it falls on General Conference weekend so large fun activities were not usually possible.

This year my birthday being on general conference weekend actually made my birthday celebration larger. We spent the day at the Ashton's house watching the conference sessions.  All of Wendy's family were also there. At some point Wendy decided that she was going to make a cake for me. I saw her puttering around in the kitchen and assumed that I was going to get a sheet cake with candles in it. Wendy had larger ideas. She made a two tiered cake with frosting drippings. Looked great for being a randomly thrown together cake.

The cake tasted pretty good as an added bonus.
